Clinical safety
Intended purpose & your responsibility
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Version 1.0
Intended purpose
Iris Clinical supports UK-registered optometrists and pre-registration optometrists by providing cited clinical information drawn from UK guidance, helping draft referral letters and clinical notes for clinician review, and supporting revision for CLiP and the OSCE.
Decision-support — not a medical device
Iris Clinical is clinical decision-support. It is not intended to be a medical device and is not regulated as one by the MHRA. It does not diagnose, triage, predict outcomes or recommend treatment for an individual patient. Every output is information or a draft for a qualified clinician to review.
No diagnosis or image interpretation
Iris does not diagnose conditions and does not interpret patient images. Images shown in the app come from a curated reference and education bank; Iris never analyses a photo of your own patient.
UK-only scope and cited sources
Iris Clinical is built for UK practice. Answers are grounded in UK sources such as NICE, the College of Optometrists, the GOC, the DVLA and RCOphth, and show the source behind each point so you can check it. Guidance changes — always confirm against the current source.
Your responsibility
You, the registered clinician, retain full responsibility for every clinical decision, every referral you send and every piece of advice you give. Review and edit all outputs before use, and apply your own professional judgement and the GOC Standards of Practice.
Do not enter patient-identifiable data
Do not enter patient names, dates of birth, NHS numbers, addresses or other identifiable details. Describe patients by age and presentation only, and add identifiers in your own practice system.
